Apple has announced significant changes to the browser choice screen and default apps on iOS and iPadOS, specifically for users in the European Union (EU), as part of its ongoing efforts to comply with the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA). These updates will be rolled out by the end of 2024 and include several key features aimed at providing EU users with greater flexibility and control over their devices.

  • Browser Choice Screen: Apple will introduce an updated browser choice screen in the EU, allowing users to select their preferred browser from the top 12 options available in their country. This screen will appear when users first open Safari after the update and during device migration

  • Default Apps: iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 will feature a new Default Apps section, enabling EU users to set defaults for various app functions, including messaging, navigation, and more

  • Deletable Apps: EU users will soon be able to delete Apple’s pre-installed apps like Safari, Messages, Photos, and the App Store, with the option to re-download them later if needed
